Question: I heard that a well-used chain gives you an edge over a brand new one. But is this true? I think my chain is almost worn out but how do you tell when it needs to be replaced?

Would you advise replacing the chain shortly before a race - or racing with a chain that has a lot of miles on it?

The only thing a well worn chain is - is closer to breaking than a new one. It's hard to tell how "spent" a chain is, sometimes you judge by mileage and sometimes by time. If it's rusty or loose in a side to side motion then it probably needs to be replaced. Chains and cassettes wear together and need to be replaced at the same time. Don't wait to the day before the race to go to a new chain - if it's defective it's gonna fail in the first ride or two so get one a week or ten days prior to an event.
